After I Was Born onto This Land by Jooyung Jung.
---------------------------------------------------------
I have been reading Silmarillion for about a year now; due to the nature of my unorganized lifestyle, the progress has been very slow. There are only 50-some pages left and I plan on finishing it.
I truly enjoy the short stories. Some may consider it as lacking deeper and more complicated emotional value, but the stories of courage and love contained in the book are very deeply moving. Men and elves, vowing to protect each other over their own lives and living up to their vows no matter the cost are... the very core attraction of the genre Fantasy. If not anything, the words are organized in such beautiful way by Tolkien that the entire book reads like a mythology.
I had a short excursion yesterday to buy the other two books. They are recommended by my father. Jooyung Jung is the first CEO of Hyundai Corporation who have been of greatest importance in Korea's rise during the 70s.
A lot of the context and meaning is lost in my translation (or in any translations for that matter). Let it be sufficient to say that the man had iron will, tried everything and never gave up. He had basically nothing but built an empire from scratch. If you understand Korea during the 60s and 70s, the context I am trying to convey would be much clearer. Let me try to convey the message with an anecdote.
During the 70s, Korea realized that the way to Korea's prosperity depended heavily on steel, ship building, automotives and construction. Korean president (a very charismatic figure Junghee Park) delegated the ship building to Jooyung Jung. Mr.Jung had nothing but he had to get some orders before he could start the ship building process. He went to England and with his limited English, convinced the Englishmen to place orders when he had nothing to build the ships with. No construction yard, nothing.
His most famous words were "Manager, Have you tried it?" He simply did not accept any excuses before something has been tried and proven to be unfeasible.
I might try to update my blog with more anecdotes if I find more interesting ones.
